Who: Tamika has just finished year 12 and is headed off to university to complete a Bachelor of Arts, with her sights set on a career in journalism. When she's not ploughing through books or writing, she's indulging in her favourite music - or headed off to the golden beaches of Bega for a swim with friends.

Where: Toothdale is  a tiny town inland from Bega on New South Wales' southern coast; it's in Yuin-Monaro country, which are the two major Aboriginal tribes who'd been there for tens of thousands of years until 1829, when a white bloke thought he'd take a wander through the area. These days it's a big dairy and beef farming area.

What is Heywire? It's a competition, open to young people aged 16 - 22 years of age who create their own story about life in Australia outside the major cities. Successful stories are presented on the ABC through ABC Radio, triple j and abc.net.au and winners also attend the Heywire Forum in Canberra in February.

But Heywire is more than just a competition. Read more about Heywire and the opportunities it presents.
